Rube Goldberg was a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist who was famous for his invention cartoons. In each one, he designed hilariously complicated devices to do simple everyday tasks. For example, check out his version of a parachute here. His name was added to dictionaries to describe anything that was unnecessarily complex.Each year, physics and engineering students in high school and college compete to build a Rube Goldberg contraption that really works to complete a designated task, using a minimum number of actions. The national contest is held in late March at Purdue university.
