Summer Reading: Monday Night Movie Club

Are you someone who loves movies? Do you enjoy talking about them after you see them? Then you'll love our Monday Night Movie Club! Sign up at the Youth Services desk and you'll see a different movie each week. After each film, the club will discuss it over snacks. We'll also talk about what we've seen in theaters, what's out on DVD, and what we should see in the future. Once you sign up, you can come to any and all of the movies, but you must register for the Summer Reading Program first.
The first three movies will be:
June 22 - Cloverfield (2008). A going-away party in New York City is interrupted by a terrifying attack. Do not see this one if you get motion sickness easily! Rated PG-13.

June 29 - Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975). The classic parody of the King Arthur legend, chock full of coconuts, killer rabbits, and some very silly knights. Rated PG (back before PG-13 existed). If you've seen it before, take someone who hasn't!

July 6 - Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008). Two teens who live for music come together one night in Manhattan. Rated PG-13.

What will we show after that? You'll help us decide! Submit your ideas for movies or genres. Want more comedies? Horror? Action? Sci-Fi? A classic movie? We want to show films that are fun, that will get people talking, and that will be new experiences for some of you. Submit ideas in the comments of this blog post, or at the program itself.

Superhero Week: Free Comic Book Day

Every day is Free Comic Book Day at the Oak Lawn Public Library -- we have collections of comics and graphic novels in the Youth Services Department and in the Young Adult collection. But the comic book industry also celebrates comics with an annual Free Comic Book Day -- the first Saturday of May.

That's right -- on May 2, you can go to your local comics shop and get certain comic books for free. This year's titles include Archie, the Avengers, Green Lantern, the Simpsons, G.I. Joe/Transformers, Star Wars, Shonen Jump, and Wolverine. Of course, we can't advertise stores on this site, but there is a way to find a nearby store.
